The view from the ramparts of the old town was enriched in 2004 by the addition of Max Cabanes's La Fille des Remparts. Climbing up towards the Market Hall, you pause for breath and look behind to see a splash of bluer sky, a glimpse of a more southerly town: the ramparts abut a gable end, where a trompe l'oeil painting transforms them into the ramparts of the town of Béziers, where Cabanes was born.
We watched as a young woman posed her friend for a photograph, leaning on the ramparts, in mimicry of the painted woman behind her.
