From the street, you see a gap in the row of buildings, opening onto a small square in front of the church; but step into the square and look at the end of the row, and perspective warps as the flat end wall of the buildings drops away to reveal another square, a ruined mansion under an impossibly huge moon, and two lovers kissing (by a bench which stands in the real square).

So far, so romantic. But on the margins of this scene of doomed love from Yslaire's Sambre, there hovers another figure, casting its shadow over the shutters of the real, as well as the painted house. Turn again...
